Tajikistan's Sughd Province
Nestled between the Hissar and Zeravshan ranges, the Fan Mountains in the Tien Shan boast unparalleled beauty. Amidst this natural wonder lies Iskandarkul Lake, the crown jewel of the region. Situated over 2000 meters above sea level, Iskandarkul Lake forms a triangular expanse covering 3.5 square kilometers with depths reaching 70 meters.
Surrounded by towering peaks, the turquoise waters of Iskandarkul Lake provide a stunning contrast to the reddish rocks adorning the slopes. The lake is fed by rivers and streams, including the Saritog, Hozormech, and Serima, which cascade down wooded gorges and form magnificent waterfalls.
Legend has it that Iskandarkul Lake was named after Alexander the Great, who is said to have lost his favorite horse, Bucephalus, in its waters. The lake itself was formed in an ancient glacial valley, with crystal-clear waters reflecting the majestic mountain giants and vibrant greenery.
Nearby, the Serima River gorge hosts the Serpent Lake, known for its abundance of snakes, while the surrounding area is home to diverse wildlife, including bears, snow leopards, and various bird species. Despite its natural splendor, the lake sustains only small trout populations.
Iskandarkul Lake is not just a natural wonder; it is also steeped in history. Traversed by Alexander the Great and his army, the lake remains a symbol of his conquests in Central Asia. Today, travelers venture through the rugged terrain of the Fan Mountains, following trails that lead to this magical lake of unparalleled beauty.
