Khorog - the city of Gorno - Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan , located on the border with Afghanistan, at the confluence of the River Gunt and the Panj River. The town lies in a valley at analtitude of 2,200 meters above the sea level. Due to the fact that it is surrounded by cliffs on all sides, the climate there is mild, summer is not hot, and winteris not freezing.Before the revolution there were two villages that have grown due to its proximity to the border. Khorog received city status in 1925.

Not far from the Khorog on the slope of the gorge is a unique Alpine Shahdara Pamir Botanical Garden. It ranks second in the world in terms of altitude (after the botanical garden of Nepal), which is 2320 meters above sea level. In this rare instance alpine flora that has almost vanished from the face of the earth can grow. Botanical Garden - is not only a beautiful sight and a tourist destination, but also a major research institution that studies and preserves the mountain plants brought here from all over the world. The collection of the botanical garden comprises more than 4000 species of plants, which are located on its 500 hectares of terraces.
